Activating the Spiritual Warrior: New Moon in Aries

“It requires a tremendous amount of discipline, boundaries and contemplation not be duped into hating some perceived enemy.”

Chris Maddox, creator of The Wild Woman Project

April begins with an energetic Aries New Moon on the 1st of the month.

As the first of the twelve zodiac signs, Aries initiates the astrological new year.

Are you ready for a spring awakening?

The fiery sign of Aries is associated with the color red.

This represents taking the kind of action that gets your blood pumping.

Fire transforms.

Incorporate activities that:

  • stir your passions
  • make you excited
  • get you moving

The Ram: Divine Leadership

Associated with the Ram, Aries breaks through obstacles using will power.

From the visionary winter months comes time for decision making.

Now is the time to tackle anything standing in your way – whether it’s decluttering your closet, whittling away debt or even confronting your own fears and limiting beliefs.

In The Sevenfold Journey, Anodea Judith writes, “to have strong will, we need consciousness – to know what our goals are, to have a conception in our mind of what we want to achieve.

To decide means that you’re literally cutting off all other options, giving victory to just one.

Decide what you’re ready to commit to and make a vow to see it to completion.

Just imagine how powerful you’ll feel once you do!

Moving from Ego Mindset to Spiritual Warrior Mindset

Mars, the planet that rules Aries, joins Venus and Saturn in the sign of Aquarius at the time of this New Moon.

How can you honor yourself and all of life?

Imagine what beauty you can build with that intention as your foundation.

According to Wikipedia, “Honor is the idea of a bond between an individual and a society as a quality of a person that is both of social teaching and of personal ethos, that manifests itself as a code of conduct, and has various elements such as valour, chivalry, honesty, and compassion…Accordingly, individuals (or institutions) are assigned worth and stature based on the harmony of their actions with a specific code of honour, and the moral code of the society at large.”

Honesty? Compassion? Valor?

Sounds like just the pieces we’ve been missing in society at large!

The shadow side of Aries energy is being self-centered and overly competitive.

This New Moon aligns with Chiron, the zodiac’s healer.

Expect to come face-to-face with wounding.

Look out for where these ego blocks show up in your life:

  • fear
  • control
  • judgement
  • unforgiveness (resentment, anger, bitterness)

Peace as a Form of Power

The ram’s horns make him, quite literally, headstrong.

Aries, too, does not like to admit being wrong or losing…and sometimes that mean’s winning at any cost.

Personally, I’ve had strong feelings of resentment coming up recently. My big aha was that resentment is a form of punishment – and the one who’s being punished is me!!

Instead of lashing out when you’re triggered, how can you embody the spiritual warrior instead?

You’ll know you’re embodying a spiritual warrior if you are willing to:

  • stand your ground
  • protect the sacred within
  • accept challenges
  • maintain power in a firm and quiet way
  • radiate the sense that you are willing to bravely fight (or walk away from one!)

Spiritual teacher Iyanla Vanzant says, “Peace is the commodity that we need most today. There is so much against-ness in the world and so much upheaval. Between all of the political, economical, and social unrest, we need peace to help us ground ourselves. Peace is how we can show up more profoundly in the world. The balance between work and play, self and others, and mind and heart are closer than we realize.”

  • I am choosing to build peace where I stand.
  • I am choosing to honor all of life.
  • I am choosing to believe that I can do hard things.
  • I am choosing to put forth goodness with each action I take.

Reflection Questions

  • What is the soul? How do we honor it? Dishonor it?
  • What is your personal code of honor? How does this mesh with the pervading moral codes of society?
  • Describe a time when you demonstrated being a spiritual warrior. How did that impact the situation?
